I was trying to avoid a complicated answer, but since you brought it up - yes you can use CalDAV, but the interactions are somewhat complex. We're hoping to merge CalDAV and the native calendar in the coming few months and event recurrence should then work across any connected calendar. It's a fair chunk of work.
I'm a huge fan of cdav in Hubzilla. Merging CalDAV with the native calendar would be a wonderful gift but they're great separate too since I use them both for different purposes.
@Mike Macgirvin I noticed in dev, the ability to add additional info for connections and was wondering if you have any ideas of merging that with CardDAV?

Of course. Here's where that is going...
Profiles are gaining the ability for vcard export (and private profiles will eventually be able to provide detailed phone and email address info as well as name and street address). You'll be able to import this additional info to your own addressbook and sync it with other devices and applications over CardDAV.
Ultimately your connection list will become a more or less traditional addressbook. On a portable device you'll be able to call, text, email, (perhaps vidchat), or zot from your connection list (addressbook) depending on what personal info you have available. Calling is supported today.
